The Growing Epidemic of Autism Spectrum Disorder
Throughout the years, autism is the most growing disorder that occurs in children. Autism comes in a variety of conditions such as challenges social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. It would cause medical issues like gastrointestinal disorders, seizures, sleep disturbances. It mostly affects an estimate of 1 in 59 children. The cause of autism is either a combination of genetic factors, environmental factors, or both. Autism is sometimes interchangeable with the term “Autism Spectrum Disorder” and “Autistic Disorder”. The term that I will be using is Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. People with ASD have difficulty communicating and interacting with other people, their interests is little and, have repetitive behaviors. These symptoms can damage the person’s ability to work properly in life whether it’s in school, work, and other areas of life. It can come in wide variations of types and severity of symptoms people experience. Most pediatricians ask parents to get their children screen for autism to get better treatments and services.
My Brother’s Case
In my family, I have four siblings, two half - sisters and two brothers. One of the brothers who is three years younger than me has Autism Spectrum Disorder one year ago. When he was small child, he was very hyperactive that he would get into a lot of trouble such as eating items in the floor or walking around instead of staying still in the street. His evaluations showed he had speech disability in elementary school since he lacked communication in the class. He received speech therapy and assigned in classes with three teachers to make sure that he communicated more with teachers and students in the class. As well as, he draw great in class which he never was afraid to show. However, they didn’t give him support when he went to middle school. It made him go back to have no social communication with the teachers and the students. He went to a big class of 30 students which had probably change the environment that he was in elementary school. Some of the social interaction behavior that my brother showed were no eye contact, doesn’t respond to his name being called, and a robot-like tone of voice. Some of his repetitive behaviors such as getting upset by slight changes in a routine, more sensitive to other people and sensory input, and would repeat certain behaviors or having unusual behaviors. His behavior does change when he is back home from school because he communicates to us a little while at school, he doesn’t. A person that has ASD may have many different types of behaviors than my brothers, but these are the behaviors that he shows.
People with ASD also have experience sleep problems and irritability which my brother does have that issue. However, they have many strengths that include being able to learn things in detail and remember information for long periods of time, being a strong visual and auditory learner, and being good in math, science, music, and art. My brother is very great artist when it comes to drawing video game characters or tv shows which means he a strong visual and auditory learner. He doesn’t like when my siblings look at his artworks, but I think they are great!
The Important Thing
It’s important to always patient with people with ASD. It can be hard to stay calm when a family member with ASD. It’s better to get the help for them like behavioral, psychological and educational therapy in order to have each family member understand what a person with ASD doesn’t like and get adjusted to it in home. If my brother heard noises of a certain types of music, game, or tv show he doesn’t like, he gets irritated and start throwing items. The situation has gone to the point that now he has started to put paper in his ears because he can’t handle the noise anymore and goes to the computer just to play games and not do his homework. It makes it hard for him to get out of the computer and we would have to punish him for being in the computer for long. He doesn’t like to go outside as well so my mom would give him a choice and if he doesn’t go outside, he will not use the computer. Either way, he would also get irritated by it.
People with ASD were born this way and there is nothing we can do to cure their disorder. The only thing they can do is to learn to live with their disorder
